Does priming the fuel system by turning the key on (without attempting to start) for 3 seconds key off then on for 3 secs then off then on for 3 seconds then trying to start help? Make sure all the cluster lights come on when cycling the key. In a perfect fuel system the fuel pressure will stay above 30 psi for weeks. There is a one way check ball in the pump and the pressure regulator closes with the engine off preventing fuel from depressurizing in the rail. If one of those fails then a very hard start condition can occur but may not be your issue. I say this because its a simple test and you stated starting fluid helps. In the end your either not getting enough fuel or too much air.
