can't get the shaft into gear on a five speed trans

I have a five speed mustang but I can't
get it into gear. Why?

Sounds like a clutch issue. If it is a hydraulic clutch, check that the fluid level is correct at the reservoir. It could also be that the cylinder mechanism that moves the clutch plate has failed and needs replacement.

Does the shifter move back and forth freely??? Will it shift into gear when the engine is off??? If not it could be that the trans is stuck between gears... To fix you need to pull the top plate or push down the retainer and twist to pull the shifter... You can then return the shift rails to neutral and re install the shifter...
