2002 winstar v6....starts but will not engage.....automatic transmission...checked all fuses....help....

Engine runs, but trans has lack of engagement, or can't go into gear. (Or is it ?) goes into gear, But will not move forward or back ? These type trans had reasons for this, and depending on the build, had different parts in use. after checking the basics like fluid level, and correct fluid being used, a visual inspection of connectors and pan, a scan may be performed fora trouble code. This helps better define the area of concern. These could have a service bulletin, or SSM discussion on failure of some parts. The best course of action is knowing your coverage by extended warranty, and of course, what it will need to get it in gear, or contain the fluid so it can drive that gear. This type trans has to be lighter because of emission laws about fuel economy. some of the lighter parts have been failing in high temperature and under stress. Calling your dealer for a course of action, following a diagnosis would be best. They are labor intensive. They require tools for getting them apart. and holding other parts in place while they are being repaired. Then the update repair or overhaul, or even an updated unit installed. My guess? inspect the shift cable, the code, and the fluid, call dealer for info and discuss the symptoms to clarify a request for info. They Run the request and see the latest method for correction with updates at lowest cost.

If you dont have a warranty you can try to buy one. If you know someone who can overhaul one? that changes everything. Breaking a clutch drum means they have to be torn completely down to access it. the rebuild parts would be needed. the tools, increase the cooler may be best prevention. Having an extended warranty is like major medical for this kind of situation.
