I recently got my 87 Subaru brat and it won't start. If you turn the key nothing happens no lights, no gauges, no click, it won't try to turn over. It has a new battery and iv checked the connections.

You're going to have to keep checking the electrical. Check the grounds to the body from the battery negative and the main fuse block. Check for corrosion and much more.

I have the same problem. Car backfired, died and then nothing. Guages don't work, key in ignition does not start car or turn dash lights. No turn signals. Only thing that seems to work is the Hazard flasher.
