Probably because of oil consumption issues.
My 2015 Forester only needed two new engines in less than 20,000 miles. The third engine seems OK so far.
Pretty good reliability if you get a good one and keep it properly serviced. The jury is still out on whether they fixed the oil consumption issues. If you decide to buy one, buy a new one and stay away from the 2013, 2014 and 2015 due to oil consumption issues. In my opinion a good alternative would be a Honda, Toyota, Mazda or Ford.

Subies are extremely "reliiable" as strictly defined. That some specimens have wear or out-of-spec issues falls under "durability". Out-of-the-box Subarus are up there with Lexus/Toy/Audi/Honda/Mazda/Hyundai/Kia et al, although Consumers Union just popped them down from 2nd to 5th this year...which is meaningless as well.
