I'm sorry to tell you but you may have a blown Head Gasket. Is there water in the oil? If the vehicle was run for a considerable period of time with only water in the cooling system, there is the high likelihood of rust build-up. There are a plethora of reasons for over heating and fusty coolant but the major consideration is - is an old Taurus worth the amount of money it will take to fix it?
