gages on dash wont move

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I own a 2005 Pontiac Montana minivan.  what would cause the speedometer needle and the temperature needles to not drop to zero when the motor is not running?  when the motor is running the needles will either stay in one position or be way above where they should be running normally.  Other than the needles not functioning properly there is no other issues with the vehicle.

Undo your negative terminal on your battery. Wait a couple of minutes and put it back on. See if it will reboot your system. If no dice there, you may have what they call a bad "stepper" motor in the gauge cluster. See link: http://www.faqs.org/car/pontiac-montana-2004/electrical-system/

Bad ground on the instrument cluster. Could be a loose harness connector also. Gauges operate on variable voltage and need a solid ground to register correctly, including dropping to 'zero'.

The bcm is what controls the gauges, defective grounding,in cluster. The needles all drop to zero when key is off. Needles come up once vehicle is in run mode, the temp if it reads zero and pops up intermittent the temp sensor is trash, the connection pins sometimes fail and need re soldered or suffer from bad connection
