My choke is not coming on

Asked by 2apple275 Nov 07, 2014 at 10:00 AM about the 1999 Audi A4

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

For the last 6 months or so the choke comes on sometimes and doesn't on others. It's getting close to winter and now the choke isn't going on at all?

Sounds like your idle air control valve is not operating properly. Might need cleaning or replaced.

The Choke your referring to is the emissions system expelling the access fuel vapors into your engine on the cold start. If your Emissions system is not coming on you will have to check your emission lines There is a charcoal canister in the back of your car leading from the doughnut hole under the car all the way to your driver side rear wheel well. It then leads to the passenger side front vapor pump. I find that most often the leak is started by a line rotting out in hte rear drivers side wheel well. Take your tire off and remove the inner housing which will reveal the emissions box behind it. The line commonly rots off just near the base of it like it did mine. This is a dealer part if you need to replace it And it also requires the rear sub frame to be dropped to put in.
