Put some cable lube in the connection to the speedometer and see if that clears it up. You may have a cable going out. Check to see if there is any kinks or damage to the cable carrier. Worst case is the speedometer is going bad. I restored my 1969 Corvette and found out the magnet in the speedometer came lose with age and need to be repaired. Try the proper lube on the cable first. If possible, pull it out and inspect it for frays or breaks. Rub lube on the entire cable and re-install it.

The first answer sounds like very Good advise, I have also heard this Before the cable sounds Kinked Remove it hold it up, let go of one end let it spin out then install it with Lube. If this doesn't work I hope your Dad isn't in the Mafia a tic-tic under the dash could mean trouble.

If you tear into the speedometer, the odometer is also inside the casing. Any quality speedometer repairman will look at the old plastic gears and change them as they will be worn and or cracked. They are not expensive to replace and well worth it.
