How do I check the coil to see if it needs to be replaced or do you change it when you do the points anyway

It doesn't have points. Matter of fact it might have coil-on-plug, I'd have to look but breaker points have been out of use since the 70's

if u done the sparkplugs & wires, the car should run smooth. the coils should be ok. if you have rough idle, then start replacing them.
