why does cyl 1 and 4 go dead

Cylinders #1 and #4 fire together, and cylinders #2 and #3 fire together. This probably means your coil pack is half burned out and needs replaced. It should be showing a code and it would be running terrible like that. For the technically minded, cylinder #1 gets a spark on it's power stroke while cylinder #4 gets a (wasted) spark on it's exhaust stroke at the same instant. But yes, your coil pack is shot but it's a low price part.
