Should I rebuild the engine , replace the engine , or replace the car ?
I own a 2000 Corolla. It has over 100K miles on it. The check engine light is
on . The engine will only get worse. My only options are to rebuild the
engine , replace the engine , or replace the car . Which should I do? I know
this is hard to answer, but I'm looking for someone who might possibly
know. My trusted mechanic doesn't do stuff like this . I don't know who else
I can trust. I'm here because people here don't have much reason to be
dishonest .

Unless it is using a lot of oil or is way down on compression there is no need to rebuild it. The CEL can come on with new cars and it usually has nothing to do with the engine condition.
I was told by my nearest Koons Toyota that my engine needed rebuilding or replacing. My engine does burn a lot of oil. It seems to be burning less oil this winter. I don't know if warmer weather impacts it or what. It's a 2000 so it's definitely not new. Thank you tennisshoes and F_O_R.
My trusted mechanic, who doesn't do engine work, told me that the engine would only get worse. I'll probably have to do something with it. I will probably be due for an emissions inspection in the summer. I doubt it would pass with a CEL.
The burning motor oil fouls the spark plugs.
I replaced all my upper and lower seals and my upper engine gasket seal. Works like a champ. I still need to work on the lower pan seal. You may perhaps need some work done on the pistons, but the older Toyota engines were built to last. Your best bet is to look around for a reputable automotive machine shop. Most rely on customer referrals to have any future business.

100,000 ! It's just about broke in. My 2005 has 225,000 and is running great! These Toyotas run forever. I don't expect to do any major engine work till well after 300K miles. Just change the oil 3 - 4 k miles. Use cruse control don't over load and tow anything. Good tires change filers and it too will run 200- 300 400K
My toy camry xle 2005 has over 280,000. miles and is still running good. Need to change out the powersteering hose tho. Have changed oil at 3-5000 miles since the day I got it. Looks like a new one as well since I have taken great care of it internally and externally. Can't find another car that can compare to it. (So far) lol.
There is nothing wrong other than the EM light. (Is the TC also lit?) It's not unusual for the Cat to be the issue. Get a low mile Toy cat from a breaker and space the o2 sensors slight outboard and no more problems. I had this at 98k. Now goes like a train again and oil use at 800miles per litre so you effectively change the oil constantly. I expect me to pass over before the car does.
I'm in a quandry. My 08 Corolla worked beautifully until I had radiator hoses exchanged. Then while driving redone radiator CEL came on, car started stalling and i nursed it to a dealer. Dealer sez original radiator hoses were attached by mechanic too tightly causing hose to ruipture a matter of days after I paid $400. for what I touight was intelligent investment in maintenance. WRONG. lESSON i LEARNED IS DRIVE ORIGINAL CAR AINTO THE GROUND AND DON'T INVEST HARD EARNED DOLLARS INTO IT. I'M HAVING DEALER FIX THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM AT $$750., AND WILL LIKELY BUY A NEW CAR WITH THE INSURANCE PROCEEDS I GET PURSUANT TO MY COMP COVERAGE COVERING NEGLIGENT AUTO REPAIRS BY SHOP THAT FUCKED UP MY CAR ORIGINALLY.

It is September 25th 2020. I'm driving a 1999 Toyota corolla. at this moment, the mileage is 546,846 km, which equals 339,794 miles. I drive 10,000 km a month, which is about 6,000 MI. I go through a litre of oil every 1,000 km, roughly, and I get an oil change every 3 weeks. I bought this car in march, 2018, and the check engine light has never been off. the last car I had was also a 1999 Toyota Corolla and that also had the check engine light on. The car before that was a 1999 Toyota Corolla and that had the check engine light on. It's the evap canister in my case. It's a $300 repair that is not necessary. your mechanic who does not do engine work should not be opining on whether or not the engine needs replacement. Get a better mechanic.

By the way, Toyota corollas burn oil. It's what they do. It says so right in the manual.
I literally just left my mechanic. I'm getting the motor replaced, the transmission replaced, new CV joint, new rock and pinion, new O2 sensor, new battery, and a brake job. Toyota's burn oil. It says right in the Corolla manual that it burns oil. Mine was burning a liter every thousand kilometers. The problem is that over the past week or so, a quarter tank of gas only got me 76 km on average. this is way way down from what it should be. The mileage? 579,000 km.
Oh shoot - can't edit! The mechanical problems are a leaking head gasket, a misfire on cylinder 4, leaking exhaust manifold seal, and oil leaking on the manifold. for what it would cost to repair the problems, the replacement is a much cheaper option

wow! wish Id read this befor,e I sold my Corolla as my mechanic said it was on its way out. Its done 223000 Km and was making a strange noise. Wish I had read the post before as when I sold it I had over 300 enquiries and couldve more than likely got way more than I did for it, With covid the price of replacing is really silly now!
