Fuel cut off switch

Asked by GuruZXFJT Oct 26, 2017 at 12:37 PM about the 1989 Toyota Camry

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Does a 1989 Toyota Camry have a fuel cut off
switch? I had the water pump replaced and now
my car won't kick over. It sounds like it wants to
but it just misses the mark.

someone replaced the water pump , it ran when you picked it up , and now it won't start but it did before the work was done ? ? I'd call who ever did the work and if they're of no help I'd never go back . Check for spark , fuel pressure

I have the person who replaced the water pump redoing the timing, I will also check the spark plugs and how do you check fuel pressure?

I didn't think any vehicle needed a timing adjustment for doing a water pump . You won't have to check the spark and fuel pressure if your "mechanic" is adjusting the timing because he must have checked them before thinking timing was the problem , do you trust them ?

I do trust him, he has been working on my cars for a long time. The car was running then it was parked for about 6 months only because no one needed the car, when we changed the fuel filter thinking that might be the problem, the filter was dirty and the gas was a brown color. It's all about troubleshooting. I was just asking questions trying to help and see if anyone can suggest something different than what he is doing. Thank you.

No, the gas tank has not been removed and cleaned out. We pumped the gas like crazy trying to start it and we didn't smell any gas, you know like when it gets flooded could it be the fuel pump?

Brown color fuel and a dirty fuel filter....not a good sign. Suggest that situation be corrected before any further diagnosis. I would be inclined to remove the fuel tank for cleaning....replace fuel pump and filter. I would then remove the spark plugs and check for SPARK fouling...replace if necessary. Then attempt a restart with a fuel pressure gauge installed. Keep us up to date on this interesting issue.

We cleaned the gas tank, changed the fuel pump, and added a new filter, we found the timing marks, so my new question is should we check the distributor cap as well? For some reason it doesn't want to start. It was running before. We are really perplexed.

Finally got the car started, it was on the wrong mark, now the catalytic converter is bad. At least when I have that repaired my car will run for another 5 to 10 years.

something plugged up the cat. it will plug up again eventually if it's not taken care of , I think fuel in the exhaust will do that ,

It was on the wrong mark......I assume you mean the engine timing mark? Interesting. Keep us up to date on this interesting issue. Thanks for the updates thus far.

Fuel getting into the exhaust is from the unburned fuel in the cylinders of the engine. This unturned fuel flows into the exhaust pipe then into the catalytic converter. This usually kills the CAT. Have you ever noticed a strong smell of rotten eggs coming from the vehicle?

No, it has never smelled like rotten eggs. I am just thinking that it's an old car with all original parts and sooner or later something has to give.
