1980 F350 gas engine
We have a F350 Ford 1 ton with a Gas 460 engine. It was a fire truck pumper with a PTO we converted to a flat bed. The truck will run fine for one day, the next day its hard to start but then won't stay running. You can pump the accelerator, and it will die. We have drained the gas tank, put in fresh gas, changed the fuel pump, put a in-line fuel filter in to monitor fuel flow, and had the carb rebuilt. Installed all new fuel lines that were rubber. What else can I do?
Have you noticed if the non start issue is temperature related? Like on warm days it seems to start great, but on cold rainy days it won't start at all?
It is hard to start in the mornings. It's been cold here but only in the high 20's at night and warms to the 50's during the day. The truck is parked in a car port. But it seems if even if it was cold that sooner or later, after several re-starts it would stay running. This truck will run about 10 seconds or so and then die. After we reinstalled the carb the truck fired right up, idled it about 30 minutes, then drove it for about 30 minutes. It ran great. Parked it, got up the next morning and it wouldn't start and stay running. Starting pulling out my hair then.
Have you tried replacing the choke assembly?
Check for vacuum leaks, change the fuel filter, check the engine timing and spark plugs to see if it is running rich or lean. Make sure the choke is operating correctly.
I will replace the chock assembly and try that.
Has new plugs, and new in-line fuel filter, plus changed the filter in the carb. Timing has been checked. I will double check all the vacuum hoses.
Is it a duel fuel tank? If so your tank selections switch, could be dirty and need to be cleaned or replaced, because if the float is stuck in the middle it won’t allow fuel to run through to the engine.
