My abs brake light just came on in my 2006 Dodge Ram 4.7 liter. Does this usually indicate a major problem or just that I need to have my pads / rotors looked at?

It could be a number of things. Some examples ........ wheel bearing, wheel sensor, wire connection, dirt or debris in the sensor spline. These I would say are some of the most common. There could be problems farther upstream in the brake system as well. Just remember that having ABS light on can make the brakes unreliable sometimes.
wheel bearing the wheel bearing and sensor are together as one piece
