Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4
automatic, when I'm in D and push the gas
it won't go anywhere but will rev up. I have
to put in in first gear to get going then into
D. Sometimes when it is in first it won't go
for a second like its slipping then it grabs
and drives, and it does have problems
shifting once I get going. What should I
do?

I had the same problem last year in my 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. I took it to a local mechanic who stated that this was caused from faulty sensors. He said that Dodge has since replaced in newer models with better sensors. He replaced all the sensors involved and that fixed the problem. You have to drain all the transmission fluid to get to the area to work on it. It cost about $300. He also found pin-holes in the pan and it was leaking all the fluid and acting up again (grabbing and then shifting). So he replaced the pan, too. Hope this helps.
