what are common problems with the VW beetle? older models..... my 75 year old mother wants one,

Too many repairs, not reliable. Get another car...

jacer1769-.by the way, I had two VWs, both purchased brand new, 1970 VW Beetle and 1978 Rabbit... dumped the first one in 4 years, car was a terrible money pit--- tried the water cooled Rabbit ? Kept the car 11 years, and I was extremely fortunate to personally know a VW mechanic who was my nextdoor neighbor, helped me a lot....NO more VWs for me --- EVER. Terrible quality control. They could have been much more savvy when they re-introduced the new VW Beetle...they blew that and then later almost SANK the company with the worst car scandal to date cheating everyone on the smog emissions.....I personally don't know how VW can even stay in business.....
