Question type: Maintenance & Repair

car starts missing terribly after about 10 minutes of driving (after warmup) it seems to build up alot of pressure in the gas tank-black smoke coming from exaust(running rich) If I hold accelerater to the floor it will quit missing, but starts missing immediatly upon normal driving. Could this be the fuel pumps? tried running without gas cap-made no difference-also took to garage, could'nt hook up to their machine, he unhooked regulator, still no difference.
before this happened the car would not start well when cold, but now the car starts right up anytime.

Hi jelsings, I would connect a fuel pressure guage to your vehicle and find out if it has enough/too mcuh pressure and adjust as necessary. You could also have a vacuum leak or bad O2 sensor which would cause the lean mixture. Hope this helps!

I know this is an old question, but one thing that has to be checked on these older VWs is the ground strap for the engine ecu. It grounds against a stud near the valve cover, and the car will run full rich if that ground strap is broken or disconnected.
