What type of gas does a 2005 E320 Mercedez use?

I have a new C-350 that runs great on regular gas even though the manual says "Premium Fuel" only. In theory I should have less power and fuel mileage, however, I have not noticed a drop in either. I would recommend only using Tier 1 fuels. That may be why mine runs so good. My combined driving numbers are significantly above the window sticker numbers. And no, I do not 'baby' it. These great cars are designed to run.

i have to compromise both answers, regular will not hurt mileage as much as the engine over time, as far as engine knock and contaminants. However, it recommends premium....I personally use mid-grade being a bit cheaper. fuel consumption differs to driver style and roadways....I know 3 different answers won't help you much so good luck!!
