I can start my -72 Dodge Charger although transmission is in Drive position

Hi. I can start my -72 Dodge Charger although the automatic transmission is in
Drive position. Does anyone know how I can troubleshoot and repair this? The
contact/switch on the transmission is new... Thanks/regards, Confused.

under the dash on your sterring colum there should be a neutral safety switch that stops the viechle from starting in gear it has either viberated loose or defective .if loose just retighten it up and see if it starts in gear if it still does then replace it with a new one.

Thanks John! On this car the switch is located on the side of the transmission (727). The switch was renewed last year so I believe it should still be okay. I heard it should be possible to adjust it with "shims". In other words re-position it in/out in order to get the correct touch from the cam inside. Is that right?
