steering problems

Asked by HMillican Dec 29, 2006 at 01:20 AM about the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a wobble in the steering wheel when I a driving. I had new pitman and idler arm replaced recently thinking it was just front end problems since it had around 145,000 miles on the vehicle. It did not cure the problem. The previous owner had installed wider wheels and tires but I have had new tires replaced and it still has a wobble. Could the steering box be going bad?

There are just so many possible reasons for a wobble like this, HMillican. You did a good job eliminating the usual suspects including wheel balance and I'm assuming alignment. If that didn't solve the problem, and if a quick inspection of the front end didn't show up any obvious failures you need to have a professional take a look at your Suburban. One problem that's typical in this blood line is a dry intermediate steering shaft. If you want to lube it yourself (a job that might be just hair beyond the typical weekend warrior mechanic) and see if it alleviates the problem here's a guide that should help ... http://gm-trucks.com/home/content/view/232/25/ Otherwise makes sure the mechanic at your local Chevy dealers looks into this as one possible cause for your wobble. Good luck!
