What do I need to change on a 2003 Ford Explorer 4.0L SOHC engine to work in a 1999 Ford Explorer with a 4.0L SOHC Engine

The engine and probably the electronics. In 99 two v6 engines were offered. The old pushrod type and the SOHC engine.
The 4.0 SOHC engine had expensive problems with the timing chains and guides. The engine has to be removed from the vehicle to service the rear chain and guides. An expensive procedure. If you can locate a pushrod 4.0 from 1999 or a little earlier you will have less headaches. The SOHC engines seems to need chain replacement/repair at about 70K. If you're stuck with the SOHC engine, replace the rear and front chains and guides during the swap over.
