I have 2000 grand am pont. the check engine soon.what are some of the thing I can check out turn off light

I changed the front brakes ,when started it the light came on check engine light a 2000 grand am pont.

Are you sure that's what the light says? The Grand Am has two lights. One is the check engine light. One is the service vehicle soon light. If it's the SES, check your gas cap and look at your headlight bulb. Get more info on GAOwnersClub.com

Or you could just go to your local Part Mart and have them run a code reader on your Pontiac. Most of the codes that come back are overly vague. And depending on how skilled your parts guy is he may be able to break it own better for you. A P0128, which is common for general motors, will tell the scanner "Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature", but what its really telling you is that your thermostat has seized in the fail- safe open position or the coolant Temperature sensor needs to be replaced. It may even be as easy as checking coolant level. The P0455 would be a good time to replace the fuel filler cap. Mike, NighthawkAutomotive@yahoo.com up for e-mails.
