I recently bought a 2000 Chevrolet Venture at an auction. It came with a key
and It has an jerry rigged wire going from a push button on the dash, to what
I assume is the starter. I'm guessing they lost the original key. When I went
to have it smogged in CA I was told that the car wouldn't even show up on
their ODB prior to running the smog. To make a short question even longer
I was wondering if that bypass ruined the ECM or causes it not to show when
getting smogged

Who knows if they are cutting wiring, they could cut some wiring from a ECM OBD2 circuits to use, to wire up the ignition starter bypass thing. So i assume that now you had to testing that , they can talk with its computer somehow. ECM can have some loose connector pins, for the OBD2 data . Of course the testing people could have bad connectors , in their test stuff also.
