is there a problem with steering shaft on the suburan

years 2003 to 2006 had a problem with the intermediate shaft, it's an easy fix if it does go bad though, I've had that problem on the 04

my 2006 chevy suburban with 160,000mi suddenly developed a loud squeeling coming from thr radio when the vehicle is started and lasts for @ 5 seconds and is always present when you turn the radio on. i have ruled out the ampflier and sevreal grounds. does anyone have any ideas, also have ruled out the alternater

I would assume the problem is in the head unit, just for shits and giggles, disconnect the charging lead on the back of the alternator because some of these radios get interference from the alternator if it has internal problems. if that has no effect i would try swapping head units.

well if disconnecting the charging wire has no effect you could check the ANTENNA wire from the back o the radio all the way out to .... (stock ant. is in the windshield ?) If one side of the ant isn't grounded to the body somewhere (like the chassis of thew radio itself ) you will get interferance or squeal . also if the stock ant is used it could have a broken lead where the wire connects at the base of the windshield .. On some of the nicer radios ,there is an antenna trimming screw located (you guessed it ) on the back side of the radio inside a 1/8 or smaller hole ,recessed about a 1/4 inch back in the chassis . the only clue to it's function is a very small set of letters next to the hole that says ... ANT. or trim . usuallly if this is static infected you can rotate the screw both ways about a half a turn either way from where it was originally ( it's a good idea to index mentally index the position of the screw before you go tweaking on it .. just don't turn it more than a half turn either way ... ( it's a pot switch and is not meant to be rotated alot or it will just get worse . if the noise gets poppy or scratchy whe youtrn the trim screw then you know you have the culprit . IF NOTHING HAPPENS WHEN ROTATED ,STOP . PUT IT BACK AS CLOSE TO WHERE IT WAS AS YOU CAN AND CHECK ANTENNA WIRE AND CONNECTION AND ANT GROUND TO CHASSIS . YOU did not mention whether this was the factory radio or an aftermarket unit . If it's the the factory unit ,go to the junk yard , select the most heavilly optioned top of the line suburban they got (chances are it will have the nicest of the factory radio's like the delco bose or a JBL . most all factory units are compatible with each others wiring requirements so the harness and speaker connections should all be the same provided the total number of speakers is the same . (plug will be the same too but just have more spaces occupied by the terminals . salvage yard radio's go for much cheaper than a new one from the dealer ... good luck ! happy fishing under the dash !!!
