It sucks and whistles... ???

Asked by Beth Dec 23, 2011 at 10:17 PM about the Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 Ram 1500, 340 K. It kinda whistles and sounds like a kitten when it's running. A whimpy sounding truck compared to the 92 dakota I used to have. That old beast was throaty! The fuel consumption sucks too. Literaly! Any suggestions? I saw someone say earlier that if there was a problem with the muffler that could cause some of these problems.

Pluged Cats?? Dynaflow Exhoust Makes A Nice Sound, Magnaflow Too, Any Exhoust Shops Near Buy, Consult Them On What To Use, The Just Get The Parts OnYour Own At A Different Store And Then Do The Work Your Self!!!!

Plugged Cats? :/ I'm not really looking to do a ton of work on this truck, just thought there would be something that would help it not sound like a car... Do you know if doing some work to the exaust WOULD help the fuel consumption?

For Sound=Change Or Bypass Muffler (Bypass May Not Be Legal In Some Places.) Yes An Exhoust Mod Will Affect MPG, But It Is One PART Of Many Facters That Affect MPG. i.e. GM Used The Same Engine In Diferent Car Models, The Same Engine In A Camaro And Corvette,, The Vette Will Have A Bigger Exhoust. Bigger Exhoust = Less Back Pressure A Larger Diamiter And Length Miffler = Deeper Sound, Check Your Local Muffler Shop For Some Ways To Change The Sound Cheeply

340,000 miles? Could be so many issues. The engine may need a rebuild, hoses replaced, etc. time to turn the truck to a mechanic to check out this long lived vehicle. Best of luck.
