Wire could be multiple things, light sensor for auto light dimming, some mirrors have lights in them, I've even seen mirrors that have a screen in them for rear view cameras. If there's a wire don't mess with it. Odds are it's for a sensor.

Hi, the wires that connect into the back of the interior rear view mirror are for a receiver for the keyless entry system. Ken Turner NZ
