How do I reset a "check engine light" on a 2005 1.6 corolla

First find out what caused it to come on. It lit for a reason. be less concerned with what is wrong with your car than just re setting the light. But you can re set it by disconnecting the negative battery cable for about 10 minutes, but it will come back on in a short time until the fault is found and fixed. Not to be confused by "maintenance required' light
There is no such thing as 2005 Corolla with a 1.6. Every Toyota Corolla since 2003, and some before that, is a 1.8Liter 1 ZZ FE except the XRS but it is still a 1.8 but higher performance
If disconnecting the battery does not clear it, you need a scan tool. You do not need an expensive one either..the $30 one will do Find the Diagnostic Link Connector. aka as OBD, on the lower left side of the dashboard on the driver's side of the car. You can find it near the hood release. Plug an OBD II scanner into this port and put the key in the ignition. Turn the key forward about two clicks, taking care not to start the engine. This will power the scanner. Scroll through the menu on the scanner using the arrow keys until you find the command that says "Erase Codes." Press "Enter." (Some scanners have a separate "Erase" button that you can press instead.) Wait for the main menu to appear or until you see the message on the scanner that says "Command Sent." Unplug the OBD II scanner and start the vehicle. Look at the instrument panel to make sure the check engine light has turned off.
