A/C Black Death??!!
I am told that Explorer of this age have had problems with the lining of the A/C components & lines breaking down & destoying the system. Mine had extensive A/C work/replacement done in 2000 when my neighbor owned it (since moved away). A few months ago the compressor clutch ceased & broke the belt. I have used the shorter belt to by-pass the compressor and engine runs fine.
1. If I replace the compressor what else would I need to replace to ensure the system is clean?
2. How can I check whether the other components need to be replaced or cleaned?
3. The system is currently charged is it possible for a competent DIY mechanic to discharge & recharge the sytem in order to do repairs? If so what would I need? If not I can probably find an A/C guy to do this for me however I would prefer to learn how to do myself (I do ot need to pay someone to screw it up for me - I an that myself for free). So I can do the same on other vehicle I have (Motorhome/trucks/boats & cars.
4. Any recommendations on books for automobile A/C repairs?
Many thanks, Nick
