Please help

I have a 94 Ford ranger with the 2.3 5speed
manual. I can't figure out why it will not start
right away. It takes forever but it will finally
start. I have to hold the gas down for it to
start. While its trying to start it backfires and
I can smell gas. The check engine light is on
also. I can't figure out what's causing it. I've
replaced wires, plugs, and coils. Any
suggestions. Please help thanks

Has 123,000 miles on the odometer but has a rebuilt engine so not quite sure. Once it starts it runs great.
