2001 chevy silverado when i put in drive it will not go forward

First, check the trans fluid and see if its low. To check it, start the truck and let it run for a few minutes so that the trans will warm up. Pop the hood and find the dipstick and pull it out. Make sure it has fluid on the line/hash marks at the bottom of the stick. If it doesn't, then you need to add fluid. It takes Dexron 3 or 4 I think... May want to check your owners manual or online just to be sure. Thats the FIRST place Id check...
