Perform a parasitic draw test. You will need a volt meter. Very cool way to track down a problem. Here's the video if it's new to you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KF1gijj03_0

its not killin the battery, could the alternator cause the radio not to power on and only let the truck run seconds at a time with a fully charged battery?

30 people found this helpful.
103,735

No, If new battery or fully charged the truck and radio would work, at least for a little while. You may have a security feature in your truck. You said you changed out the battery. This probably activated the security. Turn your key on just so the dash lights come on. Let it stay that way for a couple of mins. Then turn the key to full ON and try and start it. See if that works.

that didn't work. could it be the engine control module?

24 people found this helpful.
103,735

Could be your oil pressure sensor. I heard if it's low on oil and doesn't build pressure that can cause problems. How about fuel filter? I was reading other old posts and a guy had the same issue as you and it was just the filter. Wouldn't that be an easy fix? Have you done a pressure test for the fuel yet? You may have a bad fuel pressure regulator. It could be the engine control module. But that's just it. It could be numerous things.

Ok...all I had on the brain was truck won't start. Let's get back to the beginning. You went to work and battery was suddenly dead. Something had to drain it, right? So, what drained the battery? And secondly, does your truck have any anti-theft security in it?

yes, left my phone scarging in it the night before. i found a security reset where it said to leave the key in the on position for a couple of minutes. i did the then it started and ran but still had all the same electrical issues, radio, door chime, power windows and door locks all still not working. went back to it yesterday and now wont run for more than two seconds again. im thinking BCM. what do you think?

29 people found this helpful.
103,735

The more I read on it, I would say yes. Read the following: Body Control System Circuit Description Wake-Up State Wake-Up signals that will turn the BCM on and cause it to begin active control and/or monitoring certain devices. The BCM wake-ups are: Door ajar switches Door handle switches Dome lamp Park lamps Power door lock switches Interior lamp request active Ignition key put into the ignition switch Ignition key removed from the ignition switch Ignition in the run position Key in door lock switch Liftgate release switch Liftgate jamb switch Remote control door lock transmitter request to the BCM Asleep States The BCM is Asleep when it has stopped controlling or monitoring devices and has become idle again. After the ignition switch is turned to the lock position and 20 minutes (1216 seconds) elapse without any wake-up signals, the BCM enters into a sleep state and goes into the low power mode. If the BCM is in low power mode and detects a wake- up command, the BCM will enter into the wake-up state and enter the high power mode. If the vehicle has been left inactive (ignition in the lock position and no BCM wake-ups) for 20 minutes, the BCM will return to the low power mode. Remote Panic Alarm The head lamps and the horn will be activated after pressing the horn button on the remote control door lock transmitter. Press the horn button again to de-activate the head lamps and the horn. Pressing the horn button only once on the remote control door lock transmitter will activate the head lamps and the horn for 30 seconds or until the ignition switch is turned to the run position. Battery Run Down Protection The battery run down protection provides protection against parasitic loads and excessive battery drain and high current loads related to the courtesy lamp circuit. The battery run down protection will also protect the battery against being run down from the courtesy lamp circuit to the level which will not allow the vehicle to start. The BCM will turn off the courtesy lamp circuit after the ignition switch is turned from the run position to the off position and 20 minutes (1216 seconds) have elapsed and without a lamp request input. In order to return the BCM to normal operation once the battery run down protection has shut the interior lamps off, the ignition switch is cycled from off position to the on position. Inadvertent Power Relay The BCM turns off inadvertent power relay after 20 minutes (1216 seconds) to preserve battery power. The 20 minute timer starts after any one of the following: · Ignition switch is turned from run or start to unlock, lock or ACC. · Illuminated entry is activated · Interior lamps switch is turned on · The liftgate is opened or closed · Underhood lamp is activated · Vanity lamp is activated · Courtesy lamp is activated · Dome lamp is activated · Glove box lamp is activated · Reading lamp is activated · Inside rearview mirror lamp is activated. If any one of the below inputs occur during the 20 minute timer period, the timer is reset to 20 minutes (1216 seconds). · Ignition switch is turned from run or start to unlock, lock or ACC. · Illuminated entry is activated · Interior lamps switch is turned on · The liftgate is opened or closed · Courtesy lamp is activated · Dome lamp is activated Retained Accessory Power (RAP) The RAP feature allows the power windows, the radio and the front and rear wiper systems to be operated after the ignition switch is turned from run position to the lock position, provided that the vehicle's battery voltage is above the minimum voltage threshold when the ignition switch is turned to the off position. The power windows ,radio and the front and rear wiper systems will be turned off when any door is opened or after 10 minutes (599 seconds) have elapsed since the last ignition switch transition. Illuminated Entry Interior lights will illuminate for 15 seconds under any of the conditions listed below: · Open and close the driver's side door · Open and close the passenger side door · Open and close a rear passenger door Interior Illumination Interior lights will illuminate continuously if the interior light defeat button is off and any door is opened or the liftgate is opened, or if the dimmer switch is rotated to the on position for interior illumination. Exit Lighting Interior lights will illuminate for 40 seconds when the ignition key is removed from the ignition cylinder. Remote Illuminated Entry Interior lights will illuminate for 40 seconds when the unlock button is pressed on the remote control door lock transmitter or when the liftgate release button is pressed on the remote control door lock transmitter. Interior lights will illuminate for 2 seconds when the lock button is pressed on the remote control door lock transmitter. Power Door Lock/Unlock Function The BCM is responsible for energizing the door lock relay. The door lock relay will be energized whenever the BCM receives a command from any of the door lock/unlock switch or a input from the remote control door lock transmitter. Door Lock/Unlock Switch Function The drivers door lock switch and the passenger door lock/unlock switches are inputs to the BCM. The BCM will command the door lock relay to unlock the drivers door according to the state of the drivers door lock switch or the passenger door lock switch. Liftgate Release Function The liftgate release switch is an input to the BCM. The BCM will command the liftgate to release if the vehicle is in park/neutral or if the park brake conditions are met or if the liftgate release switch is pressed. When the BCM receives a message to activate the liftgate release solenoid from the remote control door lock transmitter, the BCM energizes the liftgate release relay if the vehicle is in park/neutral or if the park brake conditions are met. Lockout Prevention The lockout prevention feature is activated when the key is in the ignition switch, any door is opened and then the power lock switch is pressed. This feature will lock the doors then unlock the driver door. Remote Lock Press the remote control door lock transmitter lock button once and all doors will lock. Press the remote control door lock transmitter lock button twice within 3 seconds and all doors will lock and the horn will chirp. Remote Unlock Press the remote control door lock transmitter unlock button once and the driver door will unlock, the park lamps will flash and the interior lights will turn on. Press the remote control door lock transmitter unlock button twice within 3 seconds and all remaining doors will unlock, the park lamps will flash and the interior lights will turn on. Press the rear button twice within 3 seconds and the liftgate will unlock, the park lamps will flash and the interior lights will turn on. Audible Warnings When the BCM determines a driver warning sound is needed, the BCM will sound the chime when applicable. Key In Reminder The chime will sound when the ignition switch is not in the run or crank position and the ignition key is in the ignition key cylinder and the drivers door is opened. Head Lamp Reminder The chime will sound when the headlamp switch is in the parklamp or headlamp position and the dome lamp switch (thumbwheel) is not at the full down(max dim) position and the ignition switch is in the off position or ACC position. If the dome lamp switch is in the full down position (max dim) and the headlamps are turned on manually and the ignition key is removed the headlamp reminder chime will not sound. Seat Belt Reminder The chime will sound for 6 seconds when the ignition switch is turned from the off position to the run position and the seat belt is unfastened. The seat belt telltale on the IPC will also turn ON. Turn Signal Reminder The chime will sound when the right or left turn signal is turned on for more than 0.75 miles. The chime will be synchronous with the turn signal flasher. Driver Warning Telltales The BCM activates the seat belt telltale on or off in the instrument panel cluster (IPC). Interior Lighting Control The BCM can turn on some of the interior lighting independently of the interior lighting system. The vehicles lighting system also can control the same lighting components. The BCM provides the following interior lamp control: · Courtesy lamps. · Illuminated entry control of courtesy lamps. · Vanity mirror lamp is activated · Courtesy lamp is activated · Dome lamps · Glove box lamp · Reading lamps · Courtesy lamps are enabled by the following inputs: · Discrete input to the BCM from the door jamb switches or door handle or dome lamp input · Remote control door lock transmitter activation (function of illuminated entry)

If it was the switch, it wouldn't turn over at all.

James, did you get this problem fixed, we are having a similar problem with our Silverado. Changed the battery, but it won't stay running. Everything else works, though.

Skylar, do you have anti theft? It may be malfunctioning if your horn is going off. You can always pull the wire to the horn until you figure it out.

Mine did the same thing. Took the small ground wire from battery and hooked it to the ground wire from the mottor and groud them to the frame at the same place. All is well.

I have a 99 Chevy Silverado 1500 I was driving it yesterday and noticed that the radio kicked off the ac couldn't roll the windows down no wiper blades work nothing on the inside can worked, battery light is ok but checked the hot and ground on my battery and there all tight, could anybody help me ASAP before I absolutely have to take it to a mechanic?

103,735

Sounds like your BCM (Body Control Module) has gone bad. When multiple failures occur, it's usually the BCM.

Mine does about the same thing ^^ 2006 chevy silverado 1500. Be driving, all the dash warnings lights come on and turn off randomly, if abs light is on then the ac doesn't blow cold and the windows won't roll down and sometimes run a little rough. Radio still works but I need to get it figured out because I'm wanting to sell it. Think it would be the bcm? If it was is the dealer the only place that can do that or just a regular mechanic or myself?

Make sure you are grounding the small wire from the battery with the wire from the motor in the right place. Mine did not work until i did this right.

just got mine back from shop, no run no start. Loose wire under fuse panel under hood under ignition relay. Have to pull entire fuse box off to correct. With no run no start had abs error bcm error passlock error etc 03 chevy avalanche

Check for a loose ground strap to motor as it will give ABS errors,Had factor do a recall on it and they did not tighten this ground wire to the engine. This was three trips later before they could figure it out because of intermittent errors.

I've had the same problem on my 2003 chevy avalanche but I found a way. Take the hot cable off the battery, turn switch to ON position, count for 10 seconds, turn switch to OFF position and remove key, reconnect hot cable back to battery, and restart the truck. Continued to run with no rough idle.

Any ideas as to why power windows would make oil pressure gauge peg out at 80 with truck off and key out. Just started happening today. '02 avalanche.

My 07 Z71 had a weak battery, I cranked the truck. The tachometer and air conditioner quit working and service engine light was on. My truck had a rough idle and would skip when taken off from a stop. I (Advanced Auto Parts) put a computer on the truck and I got a laundry list of errors. I had the computer reset and it works fine now... Just my experience. Good luck you all.

After years of reading posts and trying to deal with my vehicle issues and failing, I finally one time ended up taking it to the experts (Chevrolet Service Department) told them my problem and about 6 hours after my appointment time I was driving it knowing the issue was addressed directly, repaired properly, not worrying if it was going to act up again and, it didn't cost as much as I expected. But even if it had cost more, the feeling of knowing the issue was resolved and my truck would start each morning and would get me to where I wanted to go with no more issues would be worth it.

So my daughters '06 Chevy Silverado 1500 won't start yet again. She has a new battery, alternator, ignition switch and starter relay. It started out with the ABS & Brake light being on and not starting but when the truck sits for a few days its fine and will start with no problems. What could this be?

Stephanie, turn the key on and wait for the "security" light to stop flashing. It can take up to 15 minutes. I have to do this everytime my battery dies.

My truck is having this type of problem. I charged the battery and the alarm came on. I bought this truck off of craigslist and I had no idea it had an alarm system. They guy only gave me the keys and no key fob. Now the lights come on the radio turns on like normal but the engine won’t start. And when I try starting it the alarm starts to beep like when it’s about to go off.

I am having issues with my 2017 Silverado, truck wont start, radio door chimes lights and such all work but truck will not crank. Had dealership check and it pointed to a 2 year old battery, surprised by that. Replaced battery 7 days later truck will not start, turn key and nothing. same condition as before. I had one day were it wouldn't start like dead battery but jiggled the shift lever and it started. Now latest is the system is saying low battery start truck. unfortunately the truck will not crank. thoughts

Diconnecting the battery worked for me! I had the same problem as OP with my 2003 Chevy Suburban. Battery only 2 months old. Only drive it about once per week. Fine last drive. But came out today, and battery was completely dead. Jumped it, and engine would crank and start, but immediately die. Also, no interior electrical worked. No door locks, no radio, no lights, etc. Let charge for a bit, still same thing. Tried suggestion by GeorgeRV17, and disconnected positive battery cable, then turned ignition on for 10 seconds, then off, and reconnected cable. Horn started blowing every second, which is part of the anti-theft response. Got it and truck started up and ran fine. Weird part was that the security light never stayed on (flashed once at start but went off) but this had to be a security lockout issue. Also no code of any sort on my ODB scanner....
