is the motor described as front and back, or left and right sides?

In general, "left" means driver side, "right" means passenger side (just as it would be if you were sitting in the car). Front and back are just that. You can also reference things to cylinder #1.
sorry, i didnt clarify. it is a sideway mounted engine. front wheel drive.
I gotcha, the front of the engine in most transverse installs faces the passenger fender. I believe that is the case with your Escape too. You can always determine the "front" of the engine by the serpentine belt and mounted accessories (alternator, power steering, AC), as well as where the timing chain/belt and harmonic balancer is mounted (although those aren't visible on the exterior). So if the front is facing the passenger fender, then the "left" side of the engine is the side facing the radiator, and the "right" side is against the firewall. (again just picture yourself sitting on top of the engine facing the front to determine sides).
