try ebay, you could also check around at junk yards for a wrecked one with a good rear diff.
I'm not attempting to insult anyone, but I just have to ask the question. I have purchased explorere from 95 to 2003 and know a lot of individuals who have done the same. Lately, on this forum, there have been a lot of questions about rear differentials. The question is just how do so many people keep blowing out rear differentials?
Alot of people dont care about their vehicles. Also see nice vehicles come in all the time and once they are out of warranty they dont want to fix anything. I guess they live beyond their means, they can afford a nice new 50k truck or suv. But cant afford to fix it when the time comes cuz their payment is 800 bucks a month. Not saying that is the case here. Just that I see it alot.
But a differential? The oldest vehicle I own is a '50 Ford which I purchased in 1971. I've never had a problem with the differential. Now, the 49 through 51 use to shap off axels on the drive wheel if you punched it to hard from a dead stop, expecially with a six cylinder standard. Finally solved that problem by having a machine shop make me one out of high grade steel. Haven't busted one is twenty years.
We dont see a whole lot that are busted. Alot that have whines and people dont like it. Bearing noises are big. Only see a few where something has actually broke. Plus they really dont make things like they used to. Always trying to make it smaller and lighter. Back in the day they made it big beefy and heavy. gas was cheap and they had to hold up to big ol v8's with lots of torque. The ones we see that are broke have usually been off-roaded or abused to some extent.
@ OJ and kbro - Our fleet seems to be going through several rear diffs on these vehicles too now that you mention it. Hmmmmm.
