Will the vehicle shift into park? Can the key be turned to the off position?

If you have a key fob the problem could also be in the wireless control module. Not an inexpensive repair so have it tested before you begin purchasing parts. Also check the interlock system on the vehicle. If prevents the key from being removed if the engine is running.

I'm sure you have had this long enough to know but just in case, the key should come out when you turn the key off no matter what gear you are in. To actually park the car, you must put it in P. I don't know of any interlock that would keep the key from being removed
