try turning the wheel either way it might be pressing against the lock and keeping the key from turning

It's a anti theft feature in most vehicles. So the key should turn and unlock your steering column. When you turn the steering wheel back and fourth left to right. Example doesn't matter right to left.

These are the correct answers EXCEPT they forgot to mention that you should try to turn the key as you move the steering wheel. It won't free up just turning the wheel.

I had this problem. By accident I came upon a work around. When the key didn't turn I pulled it out. Then hit the door lock button on the dash. Then I reinserted the key and it turns easily and starts. Then I found the underlying cause. BATTERY WAS 5 YEARS OLD AND BAD! Have your battery checked. It probably need replacing.

Disconnect key from key ring. Insert JUST the KEY into ignition. Bang on it (not too hard) woth the palm of your hand a few good times. Simultaneously turn wheel and key. Should start right up. Hope this helps, considering I LITERALLY JUST did this and it worked for me on my '02 Ford Focus ZTW wagon DOHC 16V 2.0L w/ Zetec engine...
