The front of my battery has melted. I had not noticed. I have been driving the car for 6 months

If the front of your battery faces the engine, I'd say your engine got dangerously hot. I think if your battery was overcharging you'd see the sulfuric battery acid bubbling out of the vent holes in the cap. In that case you might have an explosion hazard

Make sure you have your heat shield in place too, I've seen a few unwisely removed after the shield rusted free of it's bolts and began to rattle. Focus engine compartment are extremely tight, everything is right up against everything else.
