Asked by Kensr Aug 25, 2013 at 10:22 PM about the 2005 Ford Taurus SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It slips occassionally in lower gear.  probably 2nd.  Fluid looks clean not burnt.  It maybe over filled.  Can chaniging the filter and putting new fluid in fix my problem.

whoa...that's a toughie...taurus transmissions are cause for great trepidation...history will show----but is easy enough to drain some out, but did you check the level in Park with the engine running while HOT and check the level between the two hash marks~ go and have the fluid replaced the filter or (filters) new pan gasket and check out the magnet at the bottom of the pan~....tranny service, my man~

Generally speaking, the AXODE Transaxle either works very well or trashes itself. The bearings and thrust washers surrounding the Low/Reverse Drum and the Planetary gear set within the drum fail and litter the system with metal flakes. You could drop the pan and take a look as my associate recommends but I doubt that it will help do anything but make your wallet a little thinner. An overfilled transmission usually aerates the fluid causing squishy, weird shift but it will not make it slip. At a minimum, the seals are getting old and it's time for an overhaul. At the worst, $1800 to $2K for a remanufactured transmission and torque converter. Some transmission shops will check it out and give you an estimate for free - call around and see.
