Hit large tire tread on highway. What damage to look for?

Asked by PK2190 Jan 06, 2016 at 03:21 PM about the 2003 Audi A4 1.8T Turbo Cabriolet FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2003 Audi A4 1.8 Cabriolet and was driving on I95 when a huge tire tread flew up from under the car ahead of me (they must have run over it) hitting front of my car and then I ran over it @ 65 mph. Got home and saw that the front lower grill outline chrome piece was broken, a small rectangular cover piece on bumper (passenger side) missing & something large dark plastic hanging under car by front tires, practically touching the  ground. What other kind of damage should I look for? Oil light went on but no leak (parked inside garage for a week).

We call those 'Road gators', re-treads from semis separate. If you carry full coverage, comprehensive, my suggestion is let you insurance handle it, contact them. If not, it sounds like splash shields on your car were torn up. As for oil light, the wire from sending unit may have been damaged since there are no leaks. But keep a close eye on the oil meantime. Go ahead and take the remainder of the splash shield off, it's there for a reason and needs to be replaced, but none is better than old torn-up one dragging
