97 Audi A4 2.8 overheat!!

My heater core is bad so I bypassed it because it's
summer and I'm a DIY guy.. Ive ordered a new core and
will get to that soon, what would cause the vehicle to still
be overheating? Blown heads, sensors? Loss of pressure
due to leaks in coolant systems? Help! The coolant
system will be topped off, then ill run the car a bit, sensors
will indicate insufficient coolant, ill top off again.. when I
kill the engine coolant returns to the reservoir..

May be a bad thermostat, or water pump, or the radiator fans not turning on, even a plugged up radiator, and yes, a bad head gasket. But try purging the cooling system from any air pockets. Here is a video on how to do that... www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUpXgAJ1gjU
