Sometimes the light will stay on or need to be reset. Or you need to check the theremostat to make sure its not sticking or bad. Either way I would replace it.

when the engine is cool.. take off the radiator cap, run the engine. if there is a air bleeder, you need to open it but do not remove(usually near top hose on thermostat housing). fill the coolant till full & close cap/bleeder. if problem persists, you need to find the small leak.

If your motor is completly cool like first thing in the morning and the light is still on then your temp sensor might be out. Overheating is serious and if it is telling the truth and it is overheating your about to have real problems

If youre referring to the low coolant light, here's a little grand am tip. The sensor is at the bottom of the resivoir. When the coolant drops low, air bubbles can get trapped in the sensor. Tap lightly on the tank with a soft rubber mallet or your hand and the light should go off. I've seen this many times on many different gm models in this year.
