my 2000 grand am uses a lot of coolant but not leaking out side of engine

Head gasket is going bad.

i would either say a cracked cylinder head or a bad head gasket
A pressure test needs to be done with the engine off and cold to determine where to coolant is leaking. It could be external and burning off right away depending on where it is.
Keep in mind that what some people think is a lot may not be a lot to a mechanic.
Grand Am's have a V6 engine that is infamous for lower intake manifold leaks. Check your engine oil for signs of water. Go to GAOwnersClub.com for DIY or repair info and costs.
Yes if it's a v6 look at top of engine where intake manifold meets top of engine and it's probably leaking there. typically starts at anywhere fron 100 000 km and up
