try replacing the sparkplugs and wires; one cylinder at a time. then see if it improves. has the transmission fluid ever been changed? and what is the car miles on the OD?

plugs changed within last 500 miles, trans service 36k ago odometer at 125k, just purchased the car but have the service history since 15k

sparkplug wires can cause irregularities like what u describe.. there could be arcing from it. that would be another easy job to do. i change my wires in 5-7 years.
