sujbaru baja rumbling sound going up hills

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my subaru baja runs fine and check engine light is not on. It has 155000 miles on it. When going up a steep hill it makes what I would describe as a rumbling sound if it has to downshift a couple times and seems to be if the rpms drop below 2500. This is an automatic transmission. I have either stopped the car and turned it off or if near the top of the hill the sound will stop when road levels out. What could be causing it?

Engine noise or under the vehicle. Could be bad joint in drive train somewhere or bad wheel bearing if noise seems to be coming from under the vehicle.

It could also be an issue with an engine or transmission mount being bad or loose.
