I have a 1996 Subaru Impreza sometimes when going up a hill or even just a straight road the car will only go to 2revs but won't go past unless I change down anyone know what could be causing this?

Change down, you talking down shift? Depending on how steep a hill is, yes, you have to down shift into a lower gear. The power in the engine is related to the rpms it is running at.

Hi Rowefast, and thanks for answering this with a straight face...I simply couldn't!
Just remember that Subaru is not my forte' but driving is...lol
Hi Hope! From what I'm seeing, the wagons only came with manual trans for 96. Can you elaborate? How long have you been driving this particular impreza? In the past, did this impreza drive fine on these same roads and now is struggling? And what speeds are you having issues going over 2 revs (2,000 rpm?) in.. what? 5th gear?

With such a ridiculously poor description it's impossible to know how to help this clueless lass. I'll throw out that it's a failed MAP sensor that's screwing up the ECM-fuel calculations, forcing low-rev "limp mode" op by the ECM. Swapping out the MAP is the easiest way to diagnose, as bad MAPs don't always throw a CEL with Subies.
I was going by this: http://www.cars101.com/impreza_archive93_96.html
Also, I'm gathering that Hope might be in AU / NZ or closeby and I don't know how accurate that cars101 list will be for the "L" base wagon.. Hope, you might have to find a forum in your area for subaru's or impreza's and ask around.
