Your '95 Leg motor is probably an older 2.2i. The '01 OB really wants ONLY the 2000+ SOHC 2.5i.
the real question here is how much time and money are you willing to part with ? because to do this job you will have to rewire the 01 outback with the wires from the 95 legacy and then build a new wire plug to go from the 95 wires to the 01 wires to get the back 1/2 of the car to work as in the tail / brake /running / back up / fuel pump and plate light to work that would be about a week of time in a shop with all the books for both cars in hand and then you will have to think about the bottom line total cost to do this job could be from $5,000.- to $20,000.- or even more is it worth it ? because $20,000.- is a good down on a new outback or legacy
not a joke ! just think about it for a min first the door rate for a shop near me in canada is $98.- an hour pre tech then there is 9 hours in a day and a job like this would be strate time so one laber would be around $882.- a day plus taxes a re and re of one engine is about 8 hours but you will have to pull two engines so that would be around 12 hour then you have to think about all the wires too have to pull them out of both cars and reinstall them in to one plus reinstalling of the dash and the seats and every thing that was pulled to re and re the wires ! it all takes time so the math is sound time X shop rate = bottom line on the bill ! so where is the joke ?
that and the last engine replacement I did at work was a strat re and re with/out any add ons cost the customer was $3,000.-
