Subaru 2.5 misfire
Asked by JW Jan 12, 2017 at 08:00 PM about the 1996 Subaru Legacy Outback Wagon AWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Been working on my girlfriends 1996
subaru legacy outback with the 2.5.
Original code was a injector cyl#1
open. Ran fine before this by the way.
I replaced the injector, it ran awesome
for like half a day.
Now, the car is pinging, cutting out it
won't accelerate. Coasting or going
slow it feels like it loses fuel.
Today I just replace the pvc, tubes, fuel
filter. And it still will not accelerate.
Missing, spitting, sputtering, pinging.

Possible causes, Faulty spark plug (s). Faulty ignition coil (s), Clogged or faulty fuel injector (s), Intake air leak, Fuel injectors harness is open or shorted, Fuel Injectors circuit poor electrical connection, Ignition coils harness is open or shorted, Ignition coils circuit poor electrical connection, Insufficient cylinder compression, Incorrect fuel pressure.... Start by checking for intake leaks, intake gaskets are common caused of misfiring. If no leak are found the next step is to replace the spark plugs. If the problem persist more tests needs to be done to diagnose problem.
After I posted my question, I found a small vacuum hose off. Reconnected it. Runs a lot better. Still slight hesitation and slight miss
Pinging can simply mean that you need a higher octane gasoline. My 2003 Forester ran way better with 89 octane gas in it, my 2015 Forester also pings on regular. In my experience Subaru's don't' run all that great on regular.
Well darn it....drove into Portland and it starting cutting out, missing. Check engine light flashing now on steady. Rough idle. Gonna scan it and see what code it threw.
I suspect you need new spark plugs and maybe wires too.

Possible causes Three way catalyst converter Bank 1 Exhaust tube Intake air leaks Fuel injectors may be faulty Fuel injector leaks Spark plugs may be faulty Improper ignition timing Engine Control Module (ECM)... As the code description implies the P0420 code means that the vehicle's control module has detected that the three-way catalytic converter is not working properly (is not as efficient as the factory is expecting). Replacing the oxygen (O2) sensors may sometimes fix the code, but in most cases the catalytic convert needs to be replaced to fix the problem. If the P0420 code is combined with other codes, try fixing the other codes first.
#1 plug was shot, the gap was like .90 and the wire had a big slice in it
Yeah me too! I just wish I had smaller hands lol, absolutely no room.
Thanks for the feedback!
