I just noticed my 98 Subaru legacy2.5 gr8 wagon started to get warm, heated was working the not, could hear water running inside car through system then now I cant. I replaced thermostats and still get hot instantly after warned up of course . so now what? how do I know if it's a water pump for sure

It's not the WP, but probably internally blown head gaskets. Check for percolation...it's a famous problem on first gen (1996-1999) OBs with that fragile DOHC 2.5i DOHC motor. If so, do NOT rebuild it as the block's connecting rods rarely last much longer. Dump the car.
