Remove exhaust header pipe both sides unbolt engine mounts use a two ton floor jack and a thick piece of wood gently jack engine up keeping a eye on any wiiring or hoses looking stressed or pulled about two to three inches should clear the frame rail and some finagling will be needed to get it off the car. Be sure to warm exhaust up a little spray a penetrant on exhaust nuts bolts and studs prior to attempted extraction.

Horizontal opposed engine. Sorry buddy no misunderstanding
I did my 2001 Outback and just had to take the bolts out of the covers after removing the air intake thing and the baterry and collent bottle to get at everything , the two bottom bolts are hard to get at because the crossmember is in the way but a little patience and it can be done ( I am not sure if your vechicle is the same as my outback , be careful putting the bolts back in they are not all the same size ( don't ask me how i know LOL
excuse my roten spelling i didn't check it before i posted it sorry
