what to do

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

okay kind of specific, ill keep it short. my current car is 1996 Toyota Camry
and its
on its last leg. My mechanic told me, "drive it into the ground" because the
transmission. i dont plan on throwing a bunch more money into it. i know its
time.
with that said, i JUST paid my vehicle reg for $144 and i cannot register it
without
smog, but my check engine light is on so i cant smog it. my mechanic didnt
clear, i
assume because it wouldn't have been a responsible thing for him to do
because
nothing was fixed on the car. Now, i dont know what do to. i know i need a
new
car and i have to wait to speak with someone but in the mean time, my car is
not
registered and im running out of time. i also cant get a refund for the $144 at
this
time. so my question is, should i do what i can to smog my current car( might
have to be a hinky job) and just register it until i get a new car, or at least
come
closer. or should i not spend the extra money and just work quickly to get
something newer and hope i dont get a ticket? (if that makes sense)
thanks!

I need the OBD2 trouble codes to help you.

@F_O_R Dang. Okay. I wouldn’t have that information unfortunately. My car still drives decent. The transmission is the only thing that I could say is the biggest problem. It jumps a lot and sometimes when I accelerate, my rpm will jump really high, and my car won’t even move. Other that that the only other main problem was the butterfly valve (if that’s the correct name for it, I’m not very well versed in cars) it’s a rebuilt engine as well.. not once has it over heated.... idk if any of that helps. But thanks anyways....
